But what they don't know is that this isn't the only solution to getting what you need. The online soccer market gives soccer enthusiasts many more choices than the conventional sporting goods store. Here is some information on where and what to buy online to keep the game alive.

Where to start: As is the case with all sports gear, the quality of soccer equipment varies greatly. Depending on how serious you are about being the best, you can spend either a lot or a little. There's no reason to go all out if you mainly play pick-up games here and there, but if your goal is the professional leagues then it is a good idea to invest in quality soccer gear.

To play the game, you don't need much to begin. The basics include a pair of soccer shoes, clothing, shin guards, and a ball. Since soccer is a game you play with your feet, let's begin by discussing shoes. Your shoes are the most important equipment you'll own when playing soccer. They should fit snugly, like a glove, and allow for the maximum efficiency in control while playing. Shoes that are too loose fitting won't allow you the control you need when the ball comes your way.

There are two basic types of soccer shoes: one for play on natural grass (cleats) and the other for indoor play. Even better is a combination of turf-indoor shoe. Cleats give you sure footing and allow for quick direction changes. Indoor shoes have flat rubber soles that easily grip the hard playing surface of an indoor court. The ultra-thin sole allows you to get under the ball with your feet. Turf shoes are very similar to indoor shoes, but their soles will usually have more distinct texturing (almost like mini-cleats) for traction on turf. You may want a hybrid indoor/turf soccer shoe if you play on a variety of surfaces.

Clothing is also an essential part of soccer. The three components to any uniform include the shirt, shorts, and socks. Soccer jerseys are designed to keep you cool and wick away sweat while you run across the field. Short-sleeved jerseys are ideal for summer practices, and long-sleeved jerseys serve you well on cooler days. How should the jersey fit? It should be loose enough to let you move freely, but not so loose that it gets caught on others players when you're fighting for the ball. Soccer shorts are designed to allow full leg motion and should fall somewhere between mid-thigh and the top of your knee. To complete your uniform, you must buy soccer socks. They should be long enough to cover your shin guards, and thick enough to give your feet some cushioning.

When it comes to sports gear, don't overlook the importance of safety equipment. Getting kicked in the shins is extremely painful--that's why shin guards are so important to soccer players. To get the most protection, buy shin guards that you pull over the ankle and strap around the calf. For a greater range of flexibility, however, opt for the simple shin guards that are strapless and held in place by your socks.

The final basic component of any soccer game is the ball. Soccer balls have three pieces--the cover, the lining, and the bladder. Each of these elements affects the feel and control of the ball. The cover is the exterior of the ball; this is what makes contact with your feet. The best balls usually feature a synthetic cover; these are generally softer and more responsive than others. The lining goes between the cover and the bladder to provide structure and shape to the ball. Cheap soccer balls usually have two polyester layers, whereas the best will have four layers of cotton and polyester. And finally, the bladder holds the air in the ball. Latex bladders are usually seen in high-end balls; this means that it will require more frequent inflating than the lower-end butyl bladders.

The style, design, and quality of all of this equipment are quite far ranging. The Internet is your best resource for purchasing exactly what you need, want, and can afford. Keep these tips in mind when searching for your equipment, and you'll be on your way to soccer bliss.

Motivating Your Players

Many young soccer players come to practice or report on game days with a high sense of internal motivation. However, the question is "Is it the correct motivation for the tasks at hand?" As coaches, our challenge is to ensure that individuals' intrinsic motivation stems from an intent corresponding with the specifics of the team's practice or game.

This is not easy because we are dealing with individuals. Our society brings young players to our doorsteps with low self-esteem, poor habits, ballooning egos, grandiose visions, etc. To make it even more complex, many of these mindsets mask deep-seeded personal issue. However, we are recreational coaches, and the community is our team.

So we must become aware of the players who are intrinsically motivated by their love of the game or desire to compete. They play for an inner pride and work hard towards accomplishing challenging objectives. On the other hand, coaches must be equally aware of young players who may need external motivation. In Sports Psychology for Coaches, it is noted "the four primary needs of athletes are to have fun, feel accepted, have control, and to feel competent."

The most common tool to meet these primary needs is recognition. Yet there is a danger in using recognition in that it may trivialize or diminish the purpose of recognition itself. Therefore, when recognizing young players, make sure the recognition is specific, sincere, and is targeting a particular athletic feat. And above all else, be consistent in how you delve out the accolades.

For a recreational coach, it can be highly stimulating and rewarding to see apprehensive, self-doubting, average youngsters transform into self-confident, poised, hard-working athletes. These same attributes will be carried by many of our young players throughout their lives. The book Sports Psychology for Coaches is a good source for coaches trying to understand the driving forces behind individual and team motivation.

Learn How to Play Soccer

Are you ready to join billions of players worldwide by taking part in the worlds most popular sport? Learning how to play soccer makes you a member of the globes biggest community - and the best part is, it is easy to do. Playing soccer as a beginner can seem daunting, but in fact it is simple to pick up. The game is played by eleven players on each team on a field that, while varying in size, is generally around 115 yards by 75 yards. The object is to propel the soccer ball across the oppositions goal-line into the back of the net.

All you need to play is a marked field, two teams, a soccer ball, and an idea of the laws of the game. Thankfully these are also very elementary for the beginner, at least in their basic form.

There are some complex rules that only enthusiasts and experienced players fully understand, but the beauty of football is in its simplicity. With this in mind, remember a few core rules: only goalkeepers can touch the ball with their hands; when tackling for the ball, if you miss and hit the player, it's a foul; a foul in the defenders goal area results in a penalty kick; and there are corner kicks, goal kicks, and throw-ins, depending on how and where the ball goes out of play.

To learn how to play soccer, then, involves three steps.

Step 1

The first is to learn soccer rules: read the Laws of the Game, or at least glance through them. At just 50 large-type pages, this isn't a huge task, and you'll be surprised at some of the soccer laws in there.

Step 2.

The second step is much more enjoyable: sit back, relax, and watch a game! Whether it's online, on TV, or - the best option - in the flesh, there is nothing like getting into the thick of things by watching soccer being played. It doesn't matter what level you watch from high school through to the World Cup as long as it's played on a regulation field by eleven players a team with a referee: the basics are the same all throughout the world.

Step 3.Then there is the third step: find a local club, pull on your cleats, and step onto the pitch. Most teams have local beginners' soccer clubs for just this, and you will almost certainly not be the only one who is still learning the game.

If you really want to become good at soccer, then practice a lot. You can practice by yourself, or with a friend, but even just practising kicking a ball against a wall, or learning how to juggle a soccer ball will ensure that you improve your soccer skills, and will be on the way to becoming a good soccer player.

Lastly when learning how to play soccer, always listen to your coach and to your captain - and have fun!

Nigel Reed has been involved in soccer during the 60's, 70's and 80's as a player and has been coaching youth soccer in Australia since 2000.

Football League & Premier League - 1888 to 2009

The Football League is a league competition featuring professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888, it is the oldest such competition in world football. It was the top level football league in England from its foundation in the 19th century until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split away to form the FA Premier League. Since 1992 it has had 72 clubs evenly divided into three divisions, which are currently known as The Championship, League One, and League Two.

After four years of debate, The Football Association finally legalised professionalism on 20 July 1885. Before that date many clubs made illegal payments to "professional" players to boost the competitiveness of their teams, arousing the contempt of those clubs abiding by the laws of the amateur Football Association code. As more and more clubs became professional the ad-hoc fixture list of FA Cup, inter-county, and 'friendly' matches was seen by many as an unreliable stream of revenue, and ways were considered of ensuring a consistent income.

A Scottish draper and director of Aston Villa, William McGregor, was the first to set out to bring some order to a chaotic world where clubs arranged their own fixtures. On 2 March 1888, he wrote to the Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End, West Bromwich Albion and to the secretary of Aston Villa about the formation of a football league.

The first meeting was held at Anderson's Hotel in London on 23 March 1888 on the eve of the FA Cup Final with the name of the Football League being settled at a further meeting on 17 April at Manchester's Royal Hotel. The first season of the Football League began a few months later on 8 September with 12 member clubs.

Each club played the other twice, once at home and once away, and two points were awarded for a win and one for a draw. This points system was not agreed upon until after the season had started; the alternative proposal was one point for a win only. Preston won the first league title without losing a game, and completed the first league-cup double by also taking the FA Cup.

Every original Football League club has at least one relegation in their history, unlike some European leagues such as Spain, Scotland or Republic of Ireland.

How to Balance Soccer-Specific Strength and Fitness Training - Fartlek and Strength Training

Conditioning is absolutely crucial for overall fitness, as well as speed of play and final half effectiveness. Fartlek is one strategy proven to be extremely effective for soccer athletes, male and female. Soccer, football as it is commonly known elsewhere in the world, is one of the oldest team based sports on the planet. It requires a person to run a bit more than the length of an American football field (approximately 110 yards) consistently for approximately 90 minutes. It also requires dexterity, suppleness, and a presence of mind to concentrate on using feet and legs as hands and arms. It is no surprise that soccer is the most popular game in the world, and it is also no surprise that strength training and conditioning for soccer is probably more focused than other sports.

Soccer-specific strength and fitness training is crucial for success at the sports highest levels, youth or adult. Soccer players require a combination of aerobic and anaerobic fitness due to the nature of the game and the fact that there is continuous movement with lots of short bursts of more intense activity.

Aerobic fitness is tied to oxygen use and anaerobic fitness is tied to work, power and strength. Soccer fitness is a combination of aerobic and anaerobic fitness with further specialization for each person's age and position. Conditioning for soccer is not one size or one program fits all sort of endeavor. It is often necessary to concentrate on mental training and motor skills when dealing with younger soccer athletes because conditioning and speed training is not easily connected or does not have an impact on those younger than the beginning teen years, except with a very small and select group of "premier" level athletes. After puberty, strength and conditioning training can and should have a major effect, however sessions should be focused and controlled, based on the age and sex of the soccer athlete. Also remember that strength and conditioning sessions develop a better player but are not a replacement for individual foot skill, vision, and teamwork. However, when training is done consistently, over a period of months, amazing results are possible.

One form of aerobic fitness training for soccer is called Fartlek, which means "speed play" in Swedish. Fartlek is a form of conditioning that puts stress on the aerobic energy system by keeping the athlete moving, without stopping for long periods of time. How this differs from a regular continuous running and/or circuit training is in the variation of speeds involved, variation that taxes the body and causing the individual to adapt to the strain. Fartlek sessions last approximately 45 minutes and use everything from walking to sprints. Fartlek deals with one of the most important things in soccer: speed of play. Soccer athletes are required to accelerate quickly, have a high maximum speed, react quickly, be able to change direction, and be able to sustain their speed. Fartlek and plyometrics (exercises that allow muscles to reach maximum force quickly) round out a aerobic workout and great amazing results during a relatively short training schedule.

Anaerobic training for soccer athletes is focused more on maintaining a lean physique that is not over muscled and inflexible. Soccer athletes are required to have high-speed and endurance, as well as be able to take the physical pain and punishment that often comes with contact. Push-ups and squats have made up much of the old-school approach to soccer strength training. Push-ups develop shoulders and the core muscles, and create a more well-rounded player. Squats develop power and speed for legs. However, while great exercises, alone they are woefully inadequate for overall development of top-caliber players.

Conditioning for soccer has varied mainly by age, rather than gender. This is incorrect and does not deal with the very specific requirements, and differences, between men and women, boys and girls. The older the soccer athlete is, the more he or she will see the benefits of strength and fitness training. However, when properly administered, sex-specific and soccer-specific strength and fitness training can have a dramatic impact on the physique and the play of youth soccer athletes. The proper conditioning program, combined with strength and fitness training will keep a player strong yet lean, increase the their oxygen intake, and increase their speed of play. The proper balance of training, aerobic, such as fartlek, and strength an fitness, such as circuit training, will also provide for greater body control and reduce the risk of injury. Sex-specific, sport-specific strength and fitness training, combined with aerobic training will enhance a player's strength, endurance, confidence, speed of play, and quality of play. Today's top athletes, amateur or professional, must find and use a balanced program of fitness to play at peak levels.

The various programs offering training for sex-specific and soccer-specific vary from comprehensive and very good, to woefully inadequate and years behind the times. The need for an overall, focused, and individually designed program of strength an fitness training cannot be overstated. I have been training athletes since the early 1980s and the difference between athletes who train properly and with weights and resistance machines, and those who do not is pronounced. If it is your desire to play at the highest levels or you know someone who has that as their goal, they must commence the proper strength and fitness program immediately!

Helo bLog??
